Tech Talk Episode #36
Since launching the new PR3 and PR4 models, one of the biggest questions Dean Snell has received is simple:
What is the difference between PR3 and PR4?
In this week’s Tech Talk, Dean breaks down the key differences between the two golf balls, including feel, spin, construction, and which model may be the better fit for your game.
| Feature | PR3 | PR4 |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Slightly softer | Slightly firmer |
| Compression | Slightly lower | Slightly higher |
| Wedge Spin | Slightly lower | Slightly higher |
| Launch | Slightly higher | Slightly lower |
| Construction | 3-piece urethane | 4-piece urethane |
| Best Fit | Majority of golfers | Players who prefer firmer feel or added wedge spin |
Dean explains that the compressions of the PR3 and PR4 are actually very similar.
The PR3 is slightly lower compression, which gives it a touch softer feel. The PR4 is slightly higher compression, creating a slightly firmer feel, especially as you get closer to the green.
From a performance standpoint, the PR4 will generally produce a little more wedge spin with a slightly lower launch. The PR3 will launch a touch higher with slightly less wedge spin.
That does not mean the PR3 is a low-spin golf ball. It simply means the two models separate slightly in how they perform on wedge shots.
The PR4 Golf Ball is designed with an additional internal layer. That extra layer helps maintain speed and performance for faster swing speed players.
However, Dean makes an important point: the PR4 is not only for high-speed players.
Any golfer can benefit from either model. If you prefer a slightly firmer feel and a little more wedge spin, the PR4 may be a great fit, even if you are not a fast swing speed player.
The PR3 Golf Ball is designed to fit the majority of golfers across different skill levels, ages, and swing speeds.
Its slightly softer feel, strong urethane cover performance, and balanced spin profile make it a great all-around choice for players who want premium performance without overthinking the decision.
If you like a slightly softer feel and a touch higher launch, start with the PR3.
If you prefer a slightly firmer feel, a little more wedge spin, and added internal layer performance, try the PR4.
The good news is that both models are priced the same, so you are not paying more for the extra layer in the PR4.
Since every golfer is different, Dean recommends testing both models for yourself.
Snell offers a Tour Test Pack that includes six PR3 golf balls and six PR4 golf balls, giving you the chance to compare feel, spin, launch, and overall performance on the course.
That is the best way to determine which model fits your game best.
The difference between PR3 and PR4 is not about one being better than the other. It is about finding the model that gives you the feel, spin, and performance you prefer.
PR3 fits the majority of players with a slightly softer feel and balanced performance. PR4 offers a slightly firmer feel, added wedge spin, and an additional internal layer designed to help maintain speed for faster players.
